Janakpuri

Details

Janakpuri is best know for Janaki Mandir which is the biggest temple in Nepal located in Janakpur. It is the birthplace of goddess Sita & place of her marriage with lord Ram. The city is named after King Janak of the Mithila kingdom. He found the baby Sita in a furrow of a field and raised her as his daughter. When Sita (also called Janaki) was about sixteen, the king announced that she could be married by whoever was able to string the divine bow of Shiva. Though many royal suitors tried, only Lord Rama, the bof Ayodhya, was successful. And not only did he string the bow, he also snapped it in two. Thus, Lord Rama won the hand of Sita.

Janaki Mahal

Janaki temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Goddess Sita. There are about 70 temples around the main shrine of the Janaki Temple. The temple is named after the legendary king Janak. The temple has become one of the biggest pilgrimage sites for Hindus all around the world. The entire structure of the Janaki temple flaunts a classic blend of classical and Neoclassical designs.

The modestly quaint temple is flocked by pilgrims during the occasion of Ram Navami and Dashain which are sacred and important annual festivals dedicated to Lord Rama.

Ganga Sagar

Ganga Sagar, one of the historical ponds in Janakpur, is near the Janak Mahal. It is named after holy river Ganga Sagar ( West Bengal ).It is said that the water of this pond is brought all the way from Ganga Sagar of India, so it is also considered as a sacred pond.
